DAILY DIAPER #70

Painting night scenes is hard enough but when you add in all the ambient and artificial light that bounces around the piece comes down to trying to represent only the most crucial shapes that you see. The lights almost overwhelm your eyes so you have to look away every now and then just to clear the "sunspots" out.

I have always been interested in painting the effects of light during the nighttime. This scene is close to my home very late on a very hot night, which we've had a bunch of late.

A small study for a larger painting of the KY side of the Ohio River on a day when the clouds just seemed enormous.

DAILY DIAPER #67

This scene was painted for a photo that I snapped while up in BC on a fishing trip a few years back. This is very typical of what I like to do with my landscapes. . . take an image be it from life or photo and stretch it to what I want it to be, rather than trying to accurately note every detail.

DAILY DIAPER #66

SOLD
I have always been a fan of old cars, though I've never owned one. Too much time and money can get sunk into one of those things but they are wonderful to look at. This little lady was sitting on the side of a residential street all by its lonesome. . . candy apple red gleaming in the sun, and the canopy of trees made for a very paintable scene.

DAILY DIAPER #65

SOLD
Very close to my house, this had one of my all time favorite subjects to paint. . . a blistering hot sunet falling behind the landscape. If you've ever tried to paint one of these plein air you know you need to move fast fast fast.

I have paintined a few of these small street scenes now and I have to say they are always among my personal favorites . . . becuase it's truly what I see everyday in my own neighborhood. Paintings, in my opinion, are only %50 done when the artist signs them, it takes the viewer and his or her experiences, to finish the last %50.

Another street scene from downtown Cincinnati. One of the great things about painting in downtown Cincy is you get a nice mix of buildings mixed in with the landscape sue to the hills and river valley that just up in the backgrounds.
