Tasty Good #11 "Dioxazine Oranges"

A small warm up study of oranges using a very special color on my palette. A long time ago in college illustration class far far away . . .  I had a brilliant teacher who worked as a professional illustrator in the 60's, 70's & 80's. He was a wealth of knowledge that was wasted on me at the time, being a 19 year old snot nosed college student BUT his insights did stick with me and years later I put many of them to use in my work today. One of them was the use of Dioxazine Purple or what is more commonly know as Winsor Violet. The technique he taught was to lay a drawing down on board, fix it, cover the entire piece with a wash of D.P. (sometimes neutralized with a tiny bit of Permanent Green Light), wipe out the light areas with a turp loaded rag and build on top of this wash with transparent washes usually leaving a bit of it showing through to tie the piece together. A more contemporary Venetian method. Though this piece is not indicative of the finished illustrations that Mr. Cox was having us shoot for, it is though in the spirit of his teachings.

#349 Stick and Stones

A little trip down memory lane with this one, at least as far as the type of painting it is. A few years back I painted a handful of these little 'box' paintings. It was always a nice little challenge to see what I could cram into these little guys to make something interesting. It's almost as much fun trying to get these setup as it is painting them.

#348 Cherries Jubilee Rehash

This is a rehash of an older piece that I did that I thought needed some updating. I've only done a few pieces with flames in them but this one hung for a while without the lighter being lit and it just seemed to want to be struck. So here it is in all it's lit Glory:)

347 iPhone Reflecting

Now that Christmas is over one can find any number of deals on Christmas related bobbles to fill three still life closets. Among other things I found a sleave of cheap ornaments that reflected light, me, and my iphone quite nicely.

#346 Holiday Reflections

Another one of my clearance shelf ornament pieces. I wanted to get around to using this Santa pez dispenser before Christmas but it just wasn't meant to be. All the wonderful darks in this ornament countered by the intense greens made this guy a lot of fun to paint.
